For centuries, music has been a defining part of cultures, religions, and friendships.
I have loved to sing ever since I was young. A few years ago our Yoruba songbook needed to be reprinted, and Dad decided we needed more songs in it. So, once a week you could find the Fountain of Life youth working hard together, translating songs from English to Yoruba. We translated 30+ songs, which were all added to the new version. My favorite song that we translated was “The Wonder of Love,” partly because Dad also loves it a lot. As a youth leader's daughter, I was privileged to attend youth from a very young age, and I thoroughly enjoyed singing with the youth. I remember a particular youth rally that we had. A bunch of the youth got together to sing the song “I Looked All Over Heaven” by Albert E. Brumley in Yoruba, and it was splendid!
Then I moved to Poughkeepsie, where I didn’t constantly have youth around to sing with. This was where I begin to enjoy listening to music rather than taking an active part in it. Now as I grow older, I am able to do both! A few weeks ago, I was invited to the Fleetwood Singspiration! I excitedly said yes! So off I went to Fleetwood, and oh I took Elizabeth (cousin) along. We had a nice time driving there, except when we stopped at Chick-fil-A and the line looked really daunting so we decided we would rather starve than wait in line. The closer we got to our destination the more jittery my nerves became. I identify as an introvert who acts like an extrovert (a wannabe extrovert). Often times social interaction seems daunting at first, but when I do step into it I am able to somewhat calm down.
Moving on to the later part of the evening, which was one of the best parts—we sang for over an hour. Oh! I wish we could have sung a lot longer. Then we did some more singing Sunday morning. I had such a nice time singing and hanging out with my class sisters and Sonia. If you girls are reading this just know that you are cool.
I had no idea what I wanted to write for my first blog, but alas, something came along.
See you later,
Abigael
